Child Care Inclusion Project
Grantee: Easter Seals of Southern Nevada
Grant Period: July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008
Grant Amount: $21,961.00
Purpose:Easter Seals Southern Nevada proposes to use the training materials previously developed by our agency to prepare "typical" child care centers and care providers statewide to accept and provide quality care for children with disabilities. Educating the care providers in these typical centers will hopefully increase the number of children with disabilities that are accepted into the centers, making child care choices for families much broader.
Building Capacity in Positive Behavioral Supports
Grantee:University of Nevada, Reno/Department of Psychology
Grant Period: July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2008
Grant Amount: $75,000
Purpose:Objective 1- PBS-NV will offer a one-day workshop for up to five school districts to raise awareness and provide information regarding the basic principles and practices of PBS. There will be a hands-on portion devoted to understanding what a functional assessment (FBA) is used for and how to use various tools to compete a functional assessment.
Objective 2- PBS-NV will be bringing in a national expert to conduct an intensive workshop for teachers and professionals across the state regarding PBS. If possible, we will bring them to speak at the Mega Conference or we will schedule an intensive training for educators and other stakeholders across state. This forum will again be used to create awareness of PBS and to seriously focus on creating a systems change within the schools. We will discuss how PBS can help school personnel change from reactive and punitive approaches to preventive and proactive school wide behavior support.
Autism Data Base and Analysis

Grant Amount: $48,125.00
Purpose:The overall objective is to provide data to further our understanding of autism and to develop strategies and policies for its identification, treatment, and control in Nevada residents. Our objectives are based on recommendations from the NAS:1 and NAS:2.

Our objectives are based on recommendations from the NAS:1 and NAS:2 to disseminate valid information to consumers, families, and service providers. The Center will work with stakeholders, government officials, and researchers to reach these outcomes:
1)Support legislative action by measuring the utilization of autism services by demographic and other factors specific to Nevada.
2)Assist in procurement of external research and service funds by providing documentation on the current utilization of autism services.
3)Improve community and service provider awareness.
4)Provide information to help design and evaluate intervention activities and provide data to plan for services needed.
5)Assist researchers to describe the clinical course of autism, identify modifiable risk factors, and provide a basis for further research.
Nevada Business Leadership Network
Grantee:Synergy HRD Associates
Grant Period: July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2008
Grant Amount: $74,131.00
Purpose:The Nevada Business Leadership Network (BLN) is an employer-led initiative with its primary goal to establish at least 20 quality employment opportunities for Nevada citizens with developmental disabilities during project year 3. The BLN will increase employer awareness, appreciation, responsiveness and hiring results towards people with disabilities by:
1) facilitating employer leadership development and expanding its steering committee comprised of area employers.
2) conducting public education activities (mentoring and training for both employers and job seekers) to improve attitudes/competencies.
3) providing technical support to individual employers to improve recruitment efforts and hiring results.
4) partnering with community rehabilitation providers including VR and school districts.
5) developing new revenue sources to facilitate greater self sufficiency of the Reno/Sparks BLN, and
6) initiating development efforts to establish a new BLN community in Las Vegas.
The BLN is completing project year 2 with funding support from Nevada Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities, and has facilitated the development of new employment opportunities for 45+ people with disabilities (triple the year 2 job placement target). The BLN will seek to obtain even more and better employment opportunities for people with developmental disabilities in project year 3, by getting more employers actively involved in disability community outreach and the employment development process.
NV Housing Registry Data Collection and Update
Grantee:United Way of Nevada
Grant Period: July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2008
Grant Amount: $49,775.00
Purpose:The purpose of this project is to enhance the Nevada Housing Registry, by uploading data about accessible rental units and availability. The project director will:
1) educate landlords throughout Nevada about the importance of listing their properties in the Nevada Housing Registry,
2) list properties that are adapted for special needs in the database,
3) revise the protocol manual for keeping the database listings current, while making the database user-friendly and,
4) deliver the revised protocols and manual for database maintenance to the Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities at the conclusion of this project. The goals of the project are to make the database useable and provide an easy method to enter data so that it remains useable.
People First Self-Advocacy Project
Grantee:University of Nevada, Reno/ University Center for Excellence
Grant Period: July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2008
Grant Amount: $45,875.00
Purpose:The People First Self-Advocacy Project facilitates the expansion of the self-advocacy movement in Nevada through supporting the statewide People First of Nevada organization. This project will assist People First members to maintain and expand the statewide organization, plan and coordinate the second People First Statewide Self-Advocacy Conference; and develop a self-determination/self-advocacy training project. This training project will include developing training modules, providing train-the-trainer instruction to People First members, and provide stipends to People First members for providing training to other community members.
Consumer Leadership
Grantee:Community Chest
Grant Period: July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2008
Grant Amount: $25,000
Purpose:The Consumer Leadership Project provides stipends to individual self-advocates and to parents of children with developmental disabilities for registration, and travel costs to enable them to attend conferences and training sessions that will increase their knowledge and ability to advocate for their own needs and the needs of others with developmental disabilities. Leadership funds will also provide opportunity for groups to present speakers at local functions where larger numbers of self-advocates and parents can hear presentations.
